Sound Factory "Sound Factory" LP. 1970 brought mixed feelings for Brazilians. Victory at the World Cup was an all-too-brief distraction from the dictatorial regime that was ruling the country. As good as the version of the good Bahia Gilberto Gil, released on his spectacular album of 1971 (see text published by Rock National on 03/30/15). The Sound Factory tribute to blues master Johnny Winter (who even died recently) is also praiseworthy. Brennan's solos are at times masterful Hendrix-isms, made more enticing by their frequent burial deep in the mix, and drummer Trajano's shaky croon gives two Steve Winwood classics a fragility that, professional or not, lends a new beauty to the tired songs. The result is a record charming for its amateur-ish exuberance but also thrilling in the way the band conquers its limitations, managing an addictive, if idiosyncratic sound.
Good Times! is the twelfth studio album by the Monkees. Produced mainly by Adam Schlesinger (with some additional bonus tracks produced by Andrew Sandoval), the album was recorded to commemorate the band's 50th anniversary. It is the first Monkees studio album since Justus (1996) the longest gap to date and the first since the death of founder member Davy Jones. The album features surviving Monkees Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork, as well as a posthumous contribution from Jones.

Favourite track ? Lonesome Tears – incredible drum sound, swooping, swirling strings, and a superb Day In The Life -esque climax. Oh, the string. J Cale – Troubadour. This album is Prince at his peak – playing absolutely everything on many of the tracks, he hasn’t sounded this good since he threw away the drum machines. Dry, clean, bass-light, with his trademark guitar-sound and brass section. Sound effects, varispeed vocals, wild guitar solos – unparalleled. Favourite track: Sign o’ The Times. I mean, If I Was You Girlfriend. This album is another sonic world for me – almost entirely beats, synths and strings, and featuring some of my favourite Bjork songs of all time. Favourite track: Joga. Gil Scott-Heron – Pieces Of A Man. Why ?
