The sophomore album from 4AD label supergroup This Mortal Coil is a collection of shoegaze folk and dramatic dream pop that feels like a movie soundtrack. Half of the album is instrumental, allowing the producers to flex their mastery of swirly, psychedelic ambience and neo-gothic drama. Surprising vocal features seamlessly weave into the tapestry, including a spunky take on Talking Heads' "Drugs" from club diva Alison Limerick, and Dominic Appleton's sparse, haunting reading of "The Jeweller," penned by ‘60s folk surrealists Pearls Before Swine

This Mortal Coil was a music collective led by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the British record label 4AD. Although Watts-Russell and John Fryer were technically the only two official members, the band's recorded output featured a large rotating cast of supporting artists, many of whom were otherwise associated with 4AD, including members of Cocteau Twins, Pixies, and Dead Can Dance.
